Unvented Cylinders: A background
A hot water storage system known as an unvented cylinder does not call for a separate cold water tank installation. In order for the system to function, the water is heated either directly by use of an electric immersion heater or indirectly by means of a coil that is connected to a central heating system. The hot water cylinder is sealed (unvented) so the expansion of the water is taken up by an expansion vessel. This allows the hotter to be pressurised to 3 bar to improve efficiency and performance/flow rates.
The Benefits of Unvented Cylinders
The main two benefits a customer will notice with an unvented cylinder are higher hot water pressure and increased efficiency.
A higher water pressure can be found at the tap outlet because unlike a conventional hot water cylinder, unvented cylinders aren't fed via a cold water cistern in the loft and in turn aren't fed by gravity. Instead unvented cylinders are fed by directly from the mains with the use of a pressure reducing valve to reduce the pressure to 3 bar. This increased water pressure allows customers to fill their baths in a quicker amount of time and also experience higher pressure showers. They really come into their own when a home has more than one bathroom so a combination boiler may struggle with demand but unvented cylinders can supply multiple bathrooms with high pressure simultaneously.
Increased efficiency is the second reason a customer may want a hot water cylinder. Compared to conventional vented cylinders unvented cylinders retain heat much more efficiently due to the levels of insulation installed around the cylinder. This in-turn means less energy is required to maintain the water temperature and will lead to increased hot water costs.
These are just a couple of the advantages of unvented cylinder, if you'd like to know more please get it touch and we will be sure to help answer any queries you have.
